"ALL I WANTED TO SEE WAS A PICTURE OF GRAMPAW'S PLACE, AND LOOK WHAT I FOUND: 5600 OF YOURS!!"

Raby Family History

This project began as a study of my family history. Samuel A. Raby moved to Scarbrough in 1888 near present day Y-12. He is buried in New Hope Cemetery just outside the gate. The Rabys lived in this community three generations when my grandfather Fred S. Raby died in 1922. My father Earl F Raby attended Scarbrough School three grades before moving back to Knoxville. We have lived in Fountain City since 1942 and I wanted to know more about my Raby heritage. Because of Atomic Energy, Oak Ridge was off limits in my mind until I began to learn more about who lived there and what their home places looked like. Finding these photographs cause me to seek a way to make them accessible to the people again after 60 years. I am very proud to have been part of this project that would have been impossible without support of many folks. Lucille Hackworth Farmer, Louise Freels Reed, Ed Wescott and many others stand out as an encouragement to undertake this major task. I am thankful to PGHS and all the membership. The following list is sure to neglect some but these need recognition. PGHS Membership and Officers: Ann Worthington;PGHS Sec Mary Harris Treas. Carolyn Johnson; Finance, Robert Marlow Membership Chair, Barbara Kesterson Newsletter Editor, Carole Krummel; Webmaster, Ron Evans Pellissippian Ed., Charlie Abner; Librarian, Herbert Holladay Technical Advisor, Reid Gryder; Photo Scan Partner, Bob Copeland who suffered to endure with me in the Archives & travels. And a host of new friends in Oak Ridge. This is my contribution to future genealogists and historians who care to look back and wonder what was it like over there. My Reward is the JOY seen by those who can see the old home place photographs so hastily removed.

The tremendous importance of this project to bring these photos back to the public has taken a large investment of time and money. This website is just one of those costs. Your support in purchasing these photos and CDs will help us continue the work to bring all these images back to the public. I have worked on this since October 2000 when I first viewed the pictures. I have a large personal investment in equipment, travel and publication. I am thankful for the grants from BWXT Y12 and PGHS to pay some expense of this project. I would prefer to give these pictures away, but this is not possible, hence the $5 charge for previewing on this website to help defer these expenses. This will be credited to the first photo print order if you would like to purchase copies of the homeplace photos.

Thank You for your support, Donald Ernest Raby
